How to speak tango
A word with several meanings. It's the name of a tango party. And it's also one of the dances danced there — the fastest and most playful one. Three dances are danced in total: tango, milonga and tango waltz.
The order on the dance floor: all couples move counterclockwise around the room. Overtaking is not the custom.
Three or four songs in a row, united by one orchestra or one mood. A tanda is danced by two people, from beginning to end — like a brief encounter: meeting, getting to know each other — and until next time.
A short piece of non-tango music between tandas: a sign that you can thank each other and walk your partner back. Here the cortina might turn out to be sega, or something from The Simpsons — don't be surprised. Dancing it is not required. But allowed.
The Golden Age of tango, roughly 1935–1955: Di Sarli, D'Arienzo, Troilo, Pugliese and dozens of other orchestras the world still dances to. The foundation of most milongas — ours included.
An invitation with a glance, and it has two halves. The mirada is the look that says "I'd be happy to share this dance". The cabeceo is the answer: eyes meet, a nod — and you meet on the dance floor. Invented for the comfort of those inviting. Inviting with words works on our milonga too.
The embrace in which tango is danced. It can be close or open — whatever is comfortable for both of you, and it can change during the dance.
The two roles in a couple: one proposes the movement, the other responds. Good tango is a conversation and a shared interpretation of the music. There are no orders and no obedience in it.
The principle of our milonga: roles are not assigned to anyone. Lead if you like, follow if you like, switch if you like. Many of us dance both — and we recommend it: the dance becomes deeper and more interesting.
